LEARNING TIPS

Learning
[lur-ning] (noun)
1. Knowledge acquired by systematic study in any field of scholarly application.
2. The act or process of acquiring knowledge or skill.
3. Psychology; the modification of behaviour through practice, training, or experience.

Learning requires much dedication, focus and hard work. Here are some tips to help learn more effectively:

  • Don't procrastinate! Manage your time effectively.
  • Utilise your strongest learning style to avoid wasting time - if you don't know what your learning style is, ask us how to find out.
  • Avoid multi-tasking; distractions will hinder the amount of knowledge that you can absorb.
  • Make use of memory techniques that use both left and right brain activities to store information in your long term memory.
  • Practice makes perfect, repetition leads to retention, but UNDERSTANDING is more important than KNOWLEDGE.
  • Try teaching what you have learnt to someone else, this doesn't only enhance their skills base, but helps you to remember the content too.
  • Enhance your theoretical knowledge through practical application.

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."

OUR LEARNERS

Without a family, a home is just a house, devoid of warmth. Similarly, without its learners, IPD would be an empty buidling, lacking a purpose. We are grateful for the opportunity to impart knowledge and skills that we know enrich the lives of our learners.

HOW NOT TO SQUANDER SKILLS DEVELOPMENT BUDGETS

By Gizelle McIntyre, director of The Institute of People Development
Issued by Perfect Word Consulting (Pty) Ltd

Many corporates spend a large amount on skills development or training, without considering whether their employees are being sent on the correct training at the right time. This hinders return on investment, results in a frustrated workforce and is, essentially, nothing more than an unnecessary waste of money and time.

Considering the current economic environment, it is difficult to grasp the concept of paying for something simply because it is required, without taking every precaustion to ensure that it is a worthwhile investment. Without conducting thorough needs analyses and skills reports on a continuous basis, training will inevitably be allocated incorrectly. If a proper skills audit system is implemented that runs concurrently with the performance management system, management would be able to fill real gaps through different types of training interventions. Company spend on irrelevant courses or those that seem cheap (and quick) but have no link to actual skills gaps due to a lack of planning delivers no results and thus no return on investment (ROI).
