IPD December Newsletter

1. the receiving or conferring of an academic degree or diploma
The IPD 2013 Graduation Ceremony was held on the 8th of November at IPD. The proud graduates were first required to do a little additional learning, with the entertainment being a belly dancing tutorial. The ceremony was opened by IPD director Gizelle McIntyre, who was followed by Mark Orpen of IPD (read more...) and then the keynote speaker, Dr Marius Meyer, CEO of the South African Board of People Practice.

As part of the ceremony, learners were given the opportunity to share their testimonials regarding their studies at IPD, and in true L&D form, wowed the audience with their heartfelt and passionate speeches.

Samantha Govender opened her testimonial as follows:

I was taught that to be educated was to be free. I didn't understand the true meaning of this statement until I myself experienced this freedom. The word "education" is derived from the Latin word educatio which means breeding or bringing up. Education is therefore so much more than a degree printed on a piece of paper. It is a pivotal part of one's growth. It is the broadening and the increasing of one's abilities, their mind and their thinking. It gives us the tools to see the world from a different perspective and to have the ability to reason and evaluate. This is freedom.

Rowlands Peters, awarded with the "Learner of the Year" award for completing his Diploma and Post Graduate Certificate in one year, share that he felt honoured to address the audience regarding their achievements and visions which had materialised. "I would like to mention that receiving my ETDP qualification is one of my greatest achievements. I was able to achieve this through hard work, perserverance, discipline, integrity and passion." The Institution of People Development is a reputable service provider, facilitators are knowledgeable and inspiring. I have been enlightened and refreshed with sufficient knowledge to enable me to further my career as an ETD Practitioner.

Integrated Assessment enhancing efficient learning and skills development

By Mark Orpen

After more than a decade of 'transformation' South Africa is still faced with skills shortages in most industry sectors and the quality of the South African education system has been rated an embarrassing 133rd out of the 142 countries that participated in the 2011 - 2012 World Economic Forum study. While budgets available for education are not less than in other developing countries, the education system seems to be failing; especially for the poorer people in South Africa.
