Assessment Practices

I often wonder what others think the title of this article means, but rather than embark on a full survey, let me explain IPD's definition of the term.

It is common knowledge that the "conduct outcomes based assessment" unit standard is legislated in terms of registration as an assessor at any SETA.

What is perhaps not common knowledge is the history behind this unit standard. For those of you who have been around since the inception of the SETA in the early 2000s you will remember that the original unit standard included the design of assessment instruments and the conducting of assessments. This unit standard made the correct assumption that the average ETD practitioner would and should be able to do both. Then came the realisation that the majority of the assessors in the world of work were not going to be ETD practitioners, but rather workplace subject matter experts who were (and still are) assessing a single unit standard connected to this field of expertise, and were usually in no way connected to ETD. This means that they need to follow a well-thought out assessment plan, but do not really need to design this plan themselves. For this reason the two skills were separated into two separate unit standards.

DEFINITION OF ASSESSMENT:
Assessment is the on-going process of gathering, analysing and reflecting on evidence to make informed and consistent judgements to improve future student learning.
THE ROLE OF ASSESSMENT:
Assessment facilitates skills development and performance management decision making throughout every level of hierarchy in business; meaning that assessment practices should and could be leading to enhanced skills audits, performance appraisals and finding the correct training solutions for better productivity and performance.

ASSESSMENT PARTICIPANTS:
Assessment facilitates educational decision making throughout every level of hierarchy in education; meaning that the participants of assessment should include every person involved, including system managers, school leaders, classroom teachers, learners and, where applicable, their parents.
