Aligning the WSP with the needs of the organisation & staff
It is that time of the year again when Skills Development Facilitators and other skills planners find themselves drowning in work preparing for their Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) submission. Most practitioners' dread the task of compiling a WSP, but what should be happening is getting everyone involved i.e. line managers, employee representatives and the employees themselves.
Most important is that the WSP is informed by the needs of the organisation as well as those of individuals working for that organisation, and not for the sake of SETA compliance.
A properly planned training and development plan should contain information on how to retain current skills and develop scarce and critical skills for the future of the organisation. This would be preceded by skills audits and/or training needs analyses, which may include Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This process should assist in determining whether current employees have the required skills and identify gaps between needed skills and available skills.
"Increasingly, line managers are becoming skilled coaches, mentors and RPL advisors in partnership with HRD to support integrated learning strategies at organisational level. I predict that over the next decade, Occupationally Directed Education and Training Development competence will form an integral part of both supervisory and management qualifications as well as workplace competence requirements," said Mark Orpen, CEO of the Institute Of People Development. Thorough preparation and better training on skills development can lead to sustainable investment in skills of the organisation.
Good practice to determine organisational needs
- Are you trying to identify skills lacking in your company in order for you to meet business objectives?
- Need to determine whether current employees have the skills to increase productivity?
- Do you need to know how to facilitate strategic planning processes within the organisation to identify the skills needed?
- Need to know how to conduct or supervise skills audits to identify the actual training needs of the organisation?
- Do you need to know how to create a workplace skills plan in line with both your company policies and SETA requirements?
If you have answered yes to any of the above, then:
You should attend the IPD (5-day) Needs Analysis & Skills Planning Course to meet your needs.
